3、iting.whenTwainwas11,hisfatherdiedofpneumonia.Thenextyear,hebecameaprinter'sapprentice.In1851,hebeganworkingasatypesetterandcontributorofarticlesandhumoroussketchesfortheHannibalJournalWhenhewas18,heleftHannibalandworkedasaprinterinNewYorkCity.Hejoinedtheunionandeducatedhimselfinpubliclibr

6、leEast,hewroteapopularcollectionoftravelletters,whichwerelatercompiledasTheInnocentsAbroadin1869.MarriageandchildrenCharlesLangdonshowedapictureofhissister,Olivia,toTwain;Twainclaimedtohavefalleninloveatfirstsight.TheygotmarriedinFebruary1870.Theyhadfourchildren,whiletheonlysonwasdiedat19m
7、onths.Thecouple'smarriagelasted34years,untilOlivia'sdeathin1904.Twainpassedthroughaperiodofdeepdepression,whichbeganin1896whenhisdaughterSusydied.Olivia'sdeathin1904andJean'sonDecember24,1909,deepenedhisgloom.OnMay20,1909,hisclosefriendHenryRogersdiedsuddenly.
