3、temsinjustacoupleofmonths.AnewlanguagefromSun?Aren’ttheyaUNIXworkstationcom-pany?Whatdoesahardwarecompanyknowaboutbuildingcomputerlan-guages?IwasskepticalabouttryingtouseanylanguageproducedbySunMicrosystems.ThelanguagemyfriendwasreferringtowasJava1.0,which,ashepre-dicted,wasshippe
4、datthebeginningof1995.InlateJanuaryof1995,Icon-nectedtoSun’sWorldWideWebsite,pulleddownthefirstversionoftheJavaDevelopmentKit(JDK),andimmediatelybegantinkering.AlthoughIdidn’tyetunderstandtheoverallvisionofJava,Iwasimpressedwiththeplatformindependence,andwiththespeedatwhichIcouldb
5、uildrelativelycomplexprototypes.Intheseearlystages,IviewedJavaasareplacementforMicrosoft’sVisualBasicasaprototypingtool;however,Iwassoontoappreci-atethecapabilitiesofthisnewlanguage.Java1.0wasstillfarfromthatuto-piansoftwareworldthatIwassearchingfor,butitdemonstratedsomerealpromis
6、easanobject-orientedlanguage,andSun’scommitmenttofuturexxPREFACEenhancementsconvincedmethatJavawasthelanguageforme.Inspiteofthemanyskepticsaroundme,Iwashooked.IcontinuedtouseJava1.0,notingitsweaknessesanddoingmybesttoworkaroundthem.IeventuallydiscoveredsomeseriouslimitationsinJava
