4、ontinuallysincethedaysofAdamSmith.Thisef-forthasproducedabetterunderstandingofthesourcesofeco-nomicgrowth.Butthesubjecthasprovedelusive,andmanymysteriesremain.Tworecentwavesofresearchhavechangedourviewsonthesubject.Onewavestartedinthemid-1950sandlasteduntiltheearly1970s.Thesecondstartedinthemid-198
