2、seculturalhistory.Translationofmassivewrit-ingsofWesterncriticaltheoriesplayedapivotalroleinpromptingtheGreatCulturalDis-cussioninChinaatthetime.Byandlarge,Chineseintellectualswereoverwhelminglyre-sponsivetoWesterncriticaltheories,whichseriouslychallengedtheChinese“tra
3、di-tional”modeofcreatingandwritingaboutliterature,namelyrealism,oritsvariations:so-cialistrealismandcriticalrealism.ManyliterarycriticsandpractitionersalikewereeagertoexplorenewapproachestoliteratureinabidtoeffectaradicalculturalrepositioningaswellastorevitalizeChinese
4、literarydiscourse.Nonetheless,theauthorquestionsthepre-vailingcharacterizationofChineseliteraryscholarsandcriticsassubmissivetothis“cul-turalinvasion”.Theborrowingsareofaselectiveandeclecticnatureandsystematicintro-ductionisrare,therebyleavinglittlechanceofseriouscultu
5、ralcolonization.Thisstudybringstogetherhithertofairlyfragmentaryevidenceofnotonlyepistemologicalresis-tancebutalsoofpoliticalresistancetoWesterncriticaltheories,whileconducingacarefulinvestigationintothevariousformsandpatternsofresistancethatweremotivatedinsub-stantial
6、lydifferentways.Itcanalsobearguedthatresistanceneednotbeviewednega-tively,becauseitmaymeancriticalacceptanceandrationalrejectionofWesternideas.Meanwhile,resistancehasundergoneatraumaticbutalsoexcitingstageofdevelopmentfromnativitytomaturity,fromprejudicetorationalism.N
7、oreconstructionispossibleun-lessitisbasedonsomedegreeofresistanceratherthanindiscriminateacceptance.WhenChinaatlonglastbegantoopenuptotheworldin1979,ithadbeenlargelyde-niedanyopportunitytointeractwithWesterncriticaltheoriesforaboutthreedecades.Aprofoundsenseofinadequac
