1.IntroductionThepastdecadehasseendramaticlossesinthebankingindustry.Firmsthathadbeenperformingwellsuddenlyannouncedlargelossesduetocreditexposuresthatturnedsour,interestratepositionstaken,orderivativeexposuresthatmayormaynothavebeenassumed
5、tohedgebalancesheetrisk.Inresponsetothis,commercialbankshavealmostuniversallyembarkeduponanupgradingoftheirriskmanagementandcontrolsystems.Coincidentaltothisactivity,andinpartbecauseofourrecognitionoftheindustry'svulnerabilitytofinancialrisk,theWhartonFinancialInstitutionsCenter,with
6、thesupportoftheSloanFoundation,hasbeeninvolvedinananalysisoffinancialriskmanagementprocessesinthefinancialsector.Throughthepastacademicyear,on-sitevisitswereconductedtoreviewandevaluatetheriskmanagementsystemsandtheprocessofriskevaluationthatisinplace.Inthebankingsector,systemevaluat
