4、ninthewoodsin1676,noneoftheinhabitantsweremolested;anditwasnotuntilabouttheyear1689thatthesafetyofthesettlementwasseriouslythreatened.Threepersonswerekilledinthatyear.In1690sixgarrisonswereestablishedindifferentpartsofthetown,withasmallcompanyofsoldiersattache
5、dtoeach.Twoofthesehousesarestillstanding.Theywerebuiltofbrick,twostorieshigh,withasingleoutsidedoor,sosmallandnarrowthatbutonepersoncouldenteratatime;thewindowsfew,andonlyabouttwoandahalffeetlongbyeighteenincheswide,withthickdiamondglasssecuredwithlead,andcros
