6、sofit.ButsecondlyMarxandEngelswerenotcontenttoanalysethechangesinsociety.Indialecticstheysawthescienceofthegenerallawsofchange,notonlyinsocietyandinhumanthought,butintheexternalworldwhichismirroredbyhumanthought.Thatistosayitcanbeappliedtoproblemsof"pure"scie
7、nceaswellastothesocialrelationsofscience.ScientistsarebecomingfamiliarwiththeapplicationofMarxistideastotheplaceofscienceinsociety.Someacceptitinwholeorinpart,othersfightagainstitvigorously,andsaythattheyarepursuingpureknowledgeforitsownsake.Butmanyofthemareu
8、nawarethatMarxismhasanybearingonscientificproblemsconsideredoutoftheirrelationtosociety,forexampletotheproblemsoftautomerisminchemistryorindividualityinbiology.AndcertainMarxistsareinclinedtoregardthestudyofsuchscientificandphilosophicalproblemsasunimportant.
