2、.ThisstylehasoftenmadePoethesubjectofparody,yetinordertowritesuccessfulimitationsofPoeonemustconjurewiththecomplexquestionsthathisstyleraises.Nabokov’streatmentofPoeisinstructiveinthisregard.Nabokov’scriticshavehelpfullypointedouttheinnumerablelinksbetweenthetwowriters,buthismultipleconcernsasanovel

5、stwaytoassignawriteranidiosyncrasyquotientistousesometextthatismanifestlynotamasterpiece,tochoosesomethingotherthan,say,theopeningparagraphofNatureorasinuoussentencefromTheScarletLetter.InPoe’scasethismeansavoiding“TheFalloftheHouseofUsher”or“Ulalume”orTheNarrativeofArthurGordonPym,andlookinginstead
