2、residentandFellowsofYaleCollegeinthecityofNewHaven,tobeheldintrust,asagiftfromherchildren,inmemoryoftheirbelovedandhonoredmother,Mrs.HepsaElySilliman.OnthisfoundationYaleCollegewasrequestedanddirectedtoestablishanannualcourseoflecturesdesignedtoillustra
3、tethepresenceandprovidence,thewisdomandgoodnessofGod,asmanifestedinthenaturalandmoralworld.TheseweretobedesignatedastheMrs.HepsaElySillimanMemorialLectures.Itwasthebeliefofthetestatorthatanyorderlypresentationofthefactsofnatureorhistorycontributedtothee
4、ndofthisfoundationmoreeffectivelythananyattempttoemphasizetheelementsofdoctrineorofcreed;andhethereforeprovidedthatlecturesondogmaticorpolemicaltheologyshouldbeexcludedfromthescopeofthisfoundation,andthatthesubjectsshouldbeselectedratherfromthedomainsof
5、naturalscienceandhistory,givingspecialprominencetoastronomy,chemistry,geologyandanatomy.ItwasfurtherdirectedthateachannualcourseshouldbemadethebasisofavolumetoformpartofaseriesconstitutingamemorialtoMrs.Silliman.Thememorialfundcameintothepossessionofthe
6、CorporationofYaleUniversityintheyear1901;andthepresentvolumeconstitutesthetenthoftheseriesofmemoriallectures.2THEEVOLUTIONOFMODERNMEDICINEPREFACETHEmanuscriptofSirWilliamOsler'slecturesonthe"EvolutionofModernMedicine,"deliveredatYaleUniversityinApril,19
7、13,ontheSillimanFoundation,wasimmediatelyturnedintotheYaleUniversityPressforpublication.Dulysetintype,proofsingalleyformhadbeensubmittedtohimanddespitecountlessinterruptionshehadalreadycorrectedandrevisedanumberofthegalleyswhenthegreatwarcame.Butwiththe
8、waron,hethrewhimselfwithenergyanddevotionintothemilitaryandpublicdutieswhichdevolveduponhimandsonevercompletedhisproof-readingandintendedalterations.ThecarefulcorrectionswhichSirWilliammadeintheearliergalleysshowthatthelectureswe
