4、ainactivitiesinthefirstyearwereconcernedwithareviewofcurrentpractice.Wefirstrequestedanexpressionofinterestintheareathroughamessagesentonanumberofelectronicmailinglists.Wehadover70responsesfromindividualsinterestedincontributingtooursurveyofcomputer-basedmethods,orintere

5、stedinhearingabouttheoutcomeofoursurvey[URL1].WesetupaWeb-baseddatabaseofteachingresources,towhichindividualscouldcontributethroughaformsinterfaceaccessiblebyWebbrowser.ThecontentsofthedatabaseareregularlyconvertedtoHTMLsothatitmaybeviewedfromanywhereontheInternet[URL2].

6、Wemadethedecisiontofocusonresourcesexplicitlydesignedforeducationalpurposes,andonmaterialsthatwereaccessibledirectlyovertheInternet.Inourreportsonourfirstyearactivities(Huckvaleetal,1997a,1997b)wereviewedthecurrentuseoftheInternetfortheprovisionofteachingmaterialsinSpeec

7、hCommunicationSciences.Weconcludedthat:(i)therewasaneedforcomputer-basedteachingmaterialsinthefield,(ii)thattheInternetwasanexcitingmediumforthedevelopmentanddeliveryofsuchmaterials,and(iii)thatteachingmaterialsofdefinedfocusandlimitedrange-whichwecalled'tutorials'-provi
