2、(BurkeandNg2006),atleastinpartthroughmaintainingtheskillsoftheiremployees.Companieshavetobeabletoanticipatetechnologicalinnovationandbeabletocompetewithothercompaniesworldwide.Thisneedmakesimportantacompany’sabilitytoevolvethroughthecontinuouslearninganddevelopmentoftheemployees.Havingandret
3、ainingskilledemployeesplaysanimportantroleinthisprocess,becauseemployees’knowledgeandskillshavebecomethekeyforcompaniestobeeconomicallycompetitive(Hiltrop1999).Therefore,itisimportantthatemployersgiveemployeestheopportunitytodevelopandlearn(Arnold2005;Bernsenetal.2009;Herman2005)suchthatthew
4、orkersmaintaintheircapacitiesaseffectiveemployees,resistredundancy,andareretainedbytheircompanies.Beyondtheseeconomicpressures,companiesalsofacesomedisturbingdemographicchanges.TheaverageageofemployeesinWesterncountriesisincreasingconstantly.Inaddition,theworkersofthesocalledbabyboomgenerati
5、onaregraduallyretiring(BurkeandNg2006;Franketal.2004).Withtheretirementofthisgenerationisasignificantlossofskillsandothercapacitieswhicharenotbeingeasilyreplacedbysimplyhiringnewemployees.Theendingofthecareersofthebabyboomgenerationmeansthatcompanieslosecompetence(i.e.knowledge,andskills),al
6、lofwhichareessentialinthecurrenteconomicenvironmentinwhichcompanieshavetocompete(Hiltrop1999).Companiesexpectthattheproportionalriseintheageingpopulationwillleadtoaglobalcompetitionforthe‘best’employees.This‘competition’willbethemostintenseinthesearchforChiefExecutiveOfficers(CEO)(Conner2000
7、;HarveyandRichey2001).CEOsareconsideredbysometobethemostimportantassetsofacompany.ThefactthatthemajorityofthecurrentCEOsbelongtothebabyboomgenerationmeansthatashortageinthenearfutureishighlylikely.Companieswithpoliciesthatarefutureorientedandstrate
