2、ends,tomoreprofessionalconcerns,likeculturalissuesatwork.Manyofthestudentsthatexpresstheseconcernsassumethatculturaladaptationinvolvesatypeofbehaviormodification,andrequiresasystemofcommunicationtofacilitatethisadaptivebehaviour.Manywould-beoverseasstudentsandi
3、mmigrantsfearthattheirowncultureorlackofEnglishskillsmayinhibitthisprocessofadaptation.Whiletherearelegitimatewaysofpreparingforlivingoverseasthatinvolvecultureandlanguage,itisneitheryourculture,noryourEnglishthatwillinhibityourprocessofadaptation.Culturaladapt
4、ationdoesnotinvolvethrowingawayyourculturaltraditions,nordoesitinvolveanywholesalebehaviouralchange.AndwhiledevelopingyourskillsinEnglishcertainlyhelpsyoutounderstandmore,itdoesnotnecessarilyensurethatyouwillavoidproblemsduetoculturaldifferences.Culturaladaptat
5、ionismoreaboutsensitivity,understanding,reactionandanticipation.Sensitivitymeansbeingobservantofthereactionsofothersandlookingforsignsandmessagesthatcommunicatepeople’sfeelings.Muchofthisinvolvesnotonlyconcentratingonwhatisbeingsaid,butalsowhatisunsaidbutstillc
6、ommunicated.Nonverbalsignscancommunicatemuchmorethanmerewords.Understandingmeansthatyouarepersistentlytryingtodiscoverrealitiesbeyondthesurface.Thismeansthatyouareconstantlytryingtoclarifymeaningsandsearchingforarangeofopinionsandinterpretations,notjustaselectf
7、ew.Reactionisyourresponsetoevents.Adaptationofteninvolvesreactinginthemostconstructiveandeffectiveways,sothatthoseyouinteractwithlearnandgrowfromtheexperience,justasyoudo.Thiscontrastswithreactionsthatseemtoresultinstressandanxiety,liketempertantrumsandviolence
