3、ctofintenseresearch.Althoughnumericaltechniquesandmodelshavebeenalreadywidelyinvesti-gatedintheliteratureforsinglephase?ows,currentstudiesarestillfarfromacompleteunderstandingofrealprocessesencounteredinacountlessnumberofapplicationsinvolvingmultiplephases,suchasrocketengines
4、injectors,dieselenginesorchemicalprocess.Whentwoormoredi?erentphasesarepresentinthesystemwecandistinguishnotonlyarangeofcharacteristiclength-scalesrelatedtotheturbulentnatureofthe?ow,butalsoarangeofsizesandshapesofeachofthephasespresentinthesystem.Thisfactsigni?cantlyincrease
5、sthecomplexityofthesimulationsrequiredtoinvestigatesuchtypeofproblems,whichrequireacontinuousdevelopmentandoptimizationofthenumericaltech-niquesandmodels.Thescienti?ccommunityhasmadeanimportante?ortdevelopingmodelsformultiphase?owswhenoneofthephasescanbeconsid-eredasdisperse(
