2、ble,transformingthefieldofinquiryfromliteraryintoculturalstudies.AntonyEasthopearguesthatthenewdisciplineofculturalstudiesmusthaveanew,decentredparadigmforthecommonstudyofcanonicalandpopulartextstogether.Throughadetailedcriticismofcompetingtheory,includingBritishculturalstudies,NewHistoricismand
3、culturalmaterialism,heshowshowthisnewstudyshould—andshouldnot—bedone.Easthope’sexplorationoftheproblems,possibilitiesandpoliticsofculturalstudiestakesontheoftenevadedquestionofliteraryvalue;alsoinareadingofConrad’sHeartofDarknessalongsideBurroughs’TarzanoftheApeshedemonstrateshowtheoppositionbet
