2、ableonline13November2006AbstractProperwatermanagementinpolymerelectrolytemembrane(PEM)fuelcellsiscriticaltoachievethepotentialofPEMfuelcells.Membraneelectrolyterequiresfullhydrationinordertofunctionasprotonconductor,oftenachievedbyfullyhumidifyingtheanodeandcathodereactantgasstreams.Ontheotherhand

3、,waterisalsoproducedinthecellduetoelectrochemicalreaction.Thecombinedeffectisthatliquidwaterformsinthecellstructureandwater?oodingdeterioratesthecellperformancesigni?cantly.Inthepresentstudy,adesignprocedurehasbeendevelopedfor?owchannelsonbipolarplatesthatcaneffectivelyremovewaterfromthePEMfuelcel

4、ls.Themaindesignphilosophyisbasedonthedeterminationofanappropriatepressuredropalongthe?owchannelsothatalltheliquidwaterinthecellisevaporatedandremovedfrom,orcarriedoutof,thecellbythegasstreaminthe?owchannel.Atthesametime,thegasstreaminthe?owchannelismaintainedfullysaturatedinordertopreventmembrane

5、electrolytedehydration.Sample?owchannelshavebeendesigned,manufacturedandtestedfor?vedifferentcellsizesof50,100,200,300and441cm2.Similarcellperformancehasbeenmeasuredforthese?vesigni?cantlydifferentcellsizes,indicatingthatscalingofthePEMfuelcellsispossibleifliquidwater?oodingormembranedehydrationca

6、nbeavoidedduringthecelloperation.Itisobservedthatnoliquidwater?owsoutofthecellattheanodeandcathodechannelexitsforthepresentdesignedcellsduringtheperformancetests,andvirtuallynoliquidwatercontentinthecellstructurehasbeenmeasuredbytheneutronimagingtechnique.Thesemeasurementsindicatethatthepresentdes
