2、esbeatbackthemortalityfromtobaccouseandAIDS.Andnow,asan85-year-old,mylifehasbeenprolongedandkeptactivebywonderdrugsunknowntomyparents.Soit'sbeensomewhatsurprisinginthiseraoftriumphformodernmedicinetoseetherapidgrowthofalternative/complementarymedicine,whichisusedbyasmanyasoneinthreeAmericans.Alt
3、houghmostofthosestillrefrainfrominformingtheirregularphysiciansaboutthatuse,thereisagrowingtendencyamongphysicianstoacknowledgeandevenembracecertainformsofalternative/complementarymedicine.Changesintheuseoftheterms"alternative"and"complementary"suggesttheshapeofthisshift.Atfirst,itwascalledsimpl
4、y"alternativemedicine,"reflectingadissatisfactionwithregularmedicineaswellasaculturalrebellionagainstthebiomedicalcommunity.Inmorerecentyears,severalstudiesindicatethattherehasbeenashiftfrom"alternative"therapiesto"complementary"therapies,adoptednotinoppositiontoregularmedicinebutinalliancewithi
5、t.Andincreasinglythosewhouseoneofthemanyformsofcomplementarymedicinearenottreatingaspecificmedicalproblem.Rather,theyarepracticingpreventioninwaystheyfindmorecongruentwiththeirphilosophicalvaluesorlifestyle.NowIthinkwemaybeseeinganotherrefinement,onethatistakingusfrom"complementary"to"safeandeff
6、ective."Forsomepeople,theappealofalternativemedicineliesinitsalternativestance,andassomeofthesetherapiesenterthemainstream,someoftheseindividualsmayseekotheralternativepractices.ButmoreandmoreAmericansaredemandinggreatercertaintyfromalternativeorcomplementaryproductsasanincreasingnumberofpressre
