2、roportionassociatedwithinactivity.Methods.Inthe1987NationalMedicalExpenditureSurvey,arthritiswasde?nedusingquestionsonself-reported,doctor-diagnosedarthritisorrheumatism.Physicalactivitywasde?nedusingaself-reportquestiononlevelofactivity.Inactivity-associat
3、edmedicalcostswerederivedbysubtractingcostsforactiveadultsfromcostsforinactiveadultsaftercontrollingforfunctionallimitation.Results.Among5,486adultswitharthritis,inactivepersonshadhighermedicalcoststhandidactivepersonsinalldemographicgroupsexamined.Inmultiv
4、ariatemodelsadjustingforkeycovariates,theproportionofcostsassociatedwithinactivityaveraged12.4%($1,250in2000dollars)andrangedfrom7.8%to14.3%amongvariousdemographicgroups.Conclusion.Inactivity-associatedmedicalcostsamongpersonswitharthritisareconsiderable.Ph
