3、findustryclustersonthebasisofunevenlydistributedresources,andhistorianshaveprovidedrichdescriptiveinsightintothedevelopmentaldynamicsofparticularmetropolitanregions,littlesystematictheoryhasbeenadvancedtoexplaincross-regionalin?owsandout?owsofresources,especiallywithrespecttopatternsinclusterd
4、evelopment.Thispaperexaminestheconceptofregionalindustrialidentityasasocialcodethat(1)arisesfromthesharedunderstandingsofresidentsandexternalaudiencesaboutthesuitabilityofaregionforparticularkindsofbusinessactivityand(2)in?uencesdecisionsaboutwheretolocateinvestments.Wearguethatsuchunderstandi
5、ngsareprincipallyinformedbycon?gurationsofindustryclustersthathavealreadyformedinaregion.Clusters,whicharetheresultsofhistoricalinvestments,arealsoimportantsignalsaboutthetypesofbusinessthatcanthriveinthefuture.Wedeveloptheoreticalpropositionslinkingcharacteristicsofregionalindustryclustercon?
