3、ationofthetraceelements.Immediatelyaftercollection,thesamplesweresubjectedtoaseriesofphysicalandchemicalleachlng-decompositlonexperimentsdesignedtoidentifythemajorandtraceelementcompositionofthebiogenlcparticulatematter.Emphasiswasplacedonthedeterminationofthetraceelement/majorelementratiosin
4、thevariousblogenicphasesimportantinblogeochemicalcycling.Themajorityofthetraceelementsinthesamplesweredirectlyassociatedwiththenon-skeletalorganicphasesoftheplankton.Theseassociationsincludeaverylabilefractionwhichwasrapidlyreleasedintoseawaterimmedi-atelyaftercollectionandamorerefractorycomp
5、onentwhichinvolvedspecificmetal-organicbinding.Calciumcarbonateandopalwerenotsignificantcarriersforanyofthetraceelementsstudied.Arefractoryphasecontainingaluminumandironinterrlgenousratioswaspresentinallsamples,evenfromremotepelagicenvironments.Thisnon-biogeniccarriercontributedinsignificanta
6、mountstotheothertraceelementsstudied.Theplanktonsampleswerecollectedfromsurfacewaterswithawiderangeinthedissolvedtraceelement/nutrlentratios,however,thesameelementalratiosinthebulkplanktonsampleswererelativelyconstantinalltheseenvi-ronments.Thebulkcompositionsandtherapidreleaseofthemetalsandn
7、utri-entelements(specificallyphosphorus)fromtheplanktonaftercollectionwereusedtoexaminethesystematicsofdepletionsofthedissolvedelementsfromsurfacewaters.Theseelementalratioswerecombinedwithknownfluxesofthemajorblogenlcmaterialstoestimatethesi
