3、cture,3necessarilydictatingasmall(<1mm)volumegaseousatomicensembleinterrogatedbyalow-powersemiconductorlaser.AtPTTI2002andPTTI2003,wereportedonlaboratoryexperimentsthatunderliethefundamentalarchitectureofourCSAC,basedoninterrogationofthecesiumD1transitionbythetechniqueofcoherentpopul

4、ationtrapping(CPT).Inthepastyear,thedevelopmentefforthasshiftedfromfundamentalresearchandfeasibilityinvestigationtoengineeringandprototypedevelopment.Inthispaper,wereportonthedesignofaruggedandcompactphysicspackagethatisexpectedtoexceedtheultimateperformanceandpowerrequirementsoftheC
