2、rtime.Deflectionsandrotationsarevaluesthatreflecttheoverallstructurebehavio匸Thispaperpresentsaninnovativeapproachtothemeasurementoflong-termdeformationsofbridgesbyuseofinclinometers.Highprecisionelectronicinclinometerscanbeusedtofolloweffectivelylong-termrotationswithoutdisruptionofthetraffic.In
3、additiontotheiraccuracy,theseinstrumentshaveproventobesufficientlystableovertimeandreliableforfieldconditions.TheMentuebridgesaretwin565mlongbox-girderpost-tensionedconcretehighwaybridgesunderconstructioninSwitzerland.Thebridgesarebuiltbythebalancedcantilevermethodoveradeepvalley.Thepiersare100m
4、highandthemainspanis150m.Acentralizeddataacquisitionsystemwasinstalledinonebridgeduringitsconstructionin1997.Everyminute,thesystemrecordstherotationandtemperatureatanumberofmeasuringpoints.Thesimultaneousmeasurementofrotationsandconcretetemperatureatseverallocationsgivesaclearideaofthemovementsi
5、nducedbythermalconditions.Thesystemwillbeusedincombinationwithahydrostaticlevelingsetuptofollowthelong-termbehaviorofthebridge.Preliminaryresultsshowthatthesystemperformsreliablyandthattheaccuracyofthesensorsisexcellent.Comparisonoftheevolutionofrotationsandtemperatureindicatethatthestructureres
6、pondstochangesinairtemperatureratherquickly.1.BACKGROUNDAllovertheworld,thenumberofstructuresinservicekeepsincreasing.Withthedevelopmentoftrafficandtheincreaseddependenceonreliabletransportation,itisbecomingmoreandmorenecessarytoforeseeandanticipatethedeteriorationofstructures.Inparticular,forst
