2、elatedtopics.IwasbornandgrewupinPlymouthinthecountyofDevoninthesouth-westofEngland.Asyoucanseefromthismap,PlymouthisjustafewmilesfromDartmoor,soI’vegottoknowtheplacequitewellovertheyears.Let’sbeginwithageneraldescription.Dartmoor,whichtakesitsnamefromtheriverDart,isanareaof
3、moorlandwhichcovers954squarekilometres,that’s368squaremiles.Amoorisanareaofopenandusuallyhighlandwithpoorsoilthatiscoveredmainlywithgrass,heather,gorseandbracken.Localstendtorefertoitasjust‘themoors’.Dartmoorisknownforitstors—hillstoppedwithoutcropsofgranite.Morethan160ofth
4、ehillsofDartmoorhavethewordtorintheirname.ThehighestpointisHighWillhays,whichis621metresor2,037feetabovesealevel.ThetorsarethefocusofanannualeventknownastheTenTorsChallenge,whenaround2400youngpeopleagedbetween14and19walkfordistancesofupto88kilometres(or55miles)betweententor
5、sonmanydifferingroutes.MuchmorerainfallsonDartmoorthaninthesurroundinglowlands.Asmuchofthenationalparkiscoveredinthicklayersofpeat,therainisusuallyabsorbedquicklyanddistributedslowly,sothemoorisrarelydry.Inareaswherewateraccumulates,dangerousbogsormirescanresult.Someofthebo
