3、ficulttoisolate.ThisstudyshowsCCVtosurvivewellattemperaturesbelow-20°Cbutnotattemperaturesabove4°(:.ThepresenceoffaecalmaterialmarkedlyreducedCCVsurvivaltimesattemperaturesrangingfrom20°Cto-70°C.Thus,itissuggestedthatdiagnosticfaecalmaterialshouldbediluted1:10(w/v)

5、neitherdemonstrationofthevirusbyelectronmicroscopyorbyvirusisolation.ForthelattertechniquetobesuccessfulrequiresgoodsurvivalofCCVinfaeces.Althoughcoronavirusesingeneralshowmoderatestabilityattemperaturesbelow4°C(McIntosh,1974;PensaertandCallebaut,1978;Siddelletal.,
6、1983),felineinfectiousperitonitisvirus(FIPV),acloselyrelatedvirustoCCV,isreportedtobemorelabile(Stoddart,1985).ThesurvivalofCCVatvarioustemperaturesandtheeffectofroutinelaboratoryhandlingandstorageontheinfectivityofCCVhasnotpreviouslybeendescribed.Thus,theaimofthis
