3、onandsustainabledevelopment.Efficientapplicationofavailableknowledgetopracticalsolutionstoovercomethe“knowledgeapplicationgap”ismoreimportantthangeneratingnewtheoreticalknowledge.InthemajorityofAfricancountries,theinformalsectoroftheeconomyisanemploymentrefugeforworkerswhofalloutfromtheformalse
4、ctor,andprovidesasafetynetforpoorhouseholds’income.Smallenterprisesandtheinformalsectorarebecomingthedefactomainstream,andtherealmofemploymentforthemajorityofurbandwellersindevelopingcountries.Occupationalhealthservicesandsupportinglegislationrequirerefocusing,revisionandstrengtheningtorespondt
5、othisreality.Oftenbasicpreventivemeasuresincludingeducationandtrainingforhealthandsafetyareoverlooked.Theinformalsectorincludesmanywomenandchildren;theyareusuallynotcoveredbylegislation,anddonothaveaccesstooccupationalhealthservices.Themeetingwasattendedbynational,regionalandglobalexpertsandorg
6、anizations,anditaddressed3aspectsofanew“AfricanInitiative”inOccupationalHealth,thatcanbuildonexistingexperiencesandprojects,suchasthePACE(PreventionAndControlExchange)project,theAfricanHealthyCityapproach,theILOWISEproject,etc.The3aspectsare:1.Localdemonstrationprojects.FivecitiesinAnglophoneAf
7、ricaareplanningprojectsforSSE,tobeexpandedtoothercitiesandotherlanguagegroupslater.ThesecitiesareJohannesburgandCapeTowninSouthAfrica,DaresSalaaminTanzania,YaoundéinCameroonandHarareinZimbabwe.Delegatesreviewedthesituationanalysis
