2、assleadingtoabasin.Baerhestreamwrigglesoutofthepassandflowsdownsouth.ItpassesthentothewestofZhoukoudianandfinallydrainsintoLiuliheabout10kmsouthofthevillage.ThePekingManSiteisjustonthewestsideofZhoukoudianVillage.TheexposureofsedimentarystrataaroundZhoukoudian
3、isquiteextraordinary,especiallythoseofthePlioceneandPleistocene,andthereforeattractgeologiststovisitthearea.Ontheotherhand,theareaalsobearsrichOrdovicianlimestonewithwhichthelocalhabitantsmakelime.Itisbyquarryingthelimestonethatlocalhabitantsfind,insomefissure
4、s,theso-calledDragonBones,whichscientistscallfossils.Withintheresearchframeworkofthelaboratory,FatherTeilharddeChardin,aneminentFrenchpaleontologist,andC.C.YoungstudiedthefossiliferousdepositsatZhoukoudiananddividedtheminto10layersin1929.Andthemostimportantdis
5、coveryofallwasmadeonthe2ndofDecemberin1929.ItwasinabranchingcavewhereafissurecrossesthemaincavethatPeifoundthefirstandalmostcompleteskullcapofPekingmanintheredsandyclay,whichisequivalenttothe10thlayerinthemainsection.Thediscoveryattractedgreatattentionfromscie
6、ntificcircles.Thetwohuman-liketeethfoundbeforewerenotenoughtoconvinceeveryonethattheybelongtoPekingMan,buttheskullcapgavemoreanatomicalproofandwasmuchmoreconvincing.AnimportantPaleolithicsite,thissitewasfirstexcavatedin1927,inacaveonDragonBoneHillatZhoukoudian
7、,southwestofBeijing.In1929,skullfossilsofPekingmanwerediscoveredhere,providingconcreteevidencefortheexistenceofprimitivemanintheBeijingareaandmarkingamile-stoneinthehistoryofpaleo-anthropology.Sofar,atotalof6skulls,15piecesoflowerjaw-bones,157teethandnumerouso
8、therbonesegmentsfromthebodiesofabout40humanshavebeenexcavated,providingconcretedataforthestudyoftheevolutionofpre-historicbiologyandthedevelopmentofpre-historicculture.Thestudyofge
