3、anelevatorwithany(N)numberoffloors,withspecifiedinputsandoutputs.Amodelbaseddesignapproachwasfollowed.Westartedfromastatechartmodeldevelopedforaprototypeelevatorwiththreefloors.Extensionofthemodelforavariablenumberoffloorswasconsidered.Controllerfortheprototypesystemwasimpleme
4、ntedinladderlogiconaPLCandthelimitationsofthatapproachwithregardtore-configurabilitywereidentified:viz.,intheextensionofelevatorcontrollerfor‘N’nooffloors.NextVHDLcodewasdevelopedforareconfigurableelevatorcontrollerwhere,bychangingavariablecorrespondingtotherequirednumberofflo
5、ors,thesuitablecodecanbegenerated.ThecontrollerthusgeneratedcanbeimplementedinanFPGA.ThemethodwassuccessfullytestedonaXilinxSpartan3ANFPGA.IndexTerms-Elevator,FPGA,PLC,Reconfigurable,StateChart,VHDLI.INTRODUCTIONIncontrolandautomationindustry,ProgrammableLogicControllers(PLCs)
6、arecommonlyusedtoimplementcontrolsforcomplexreactivesystems,primarilybecauseoftheireasyprogrammingenvironmentsbasedonIEC-61131-3.However,theyaremeantforsequentialeventprocessingandnotforhardreal-timereactiveenvironmentswhichrequireparallelprocessingcapabilities.Incontrast,Fiel
7、dProgrammableGateArrays(FPGAs),whichareinherentlyparallel,canbeusedtodevelopcontrolsformorecomplexsystemswithlargenumberofinputsandoutputs.Inadditiontoreconfigurability,itconsumeslesspoweranditcanprovidecomparativelylowresponsetimesandflexibilityinexpansionofdesigns.Thispaperp
