2、talcomputingpermittedscientistsandengineerstobuildandexperimentwithvariousmodelsofevolutionaryprocesses.ThisearlyworkproducedanumberofimportantECparadigms,includingevolutionaryprogramming(EP),evolutionstrategies(ESs),andgeneticalgorithms(GAs),whichse
3、rvedasthebasisformuchoftheworkdoneinthe1970s,aperiodofintenseexplorationandre?nementoftheseideas.Theresultwasavarietyofrobustalgorithmswithsigni?cantpotentialforaddressingdif?cultscienti?candengineeringproblems.Bythelate1980sandearly1990sthelevelofac
4、tivityhadgrowntothepointthateachofthesubgroupsassociatedwiththeprimaryECparadigms(GAs,ESs,andEP)wasinvolvedinplanningandholdingitsownregularlyscheduledconferences.However,withinthe?eldtherewasagrowingsenseoftheneedformoreinteractionandcohesionamongth
5、evarioussubgroups.Ifthe?eldasawholeweretomature,itneededaname,itneededtohaveanarticulatedcohesivestructure,anditneededareservoirforarchivalliterature.The1990sre?ectthismaturationwiththechoiceofevolutionarycomputationasthenameofthe?eld,theestablishmen
6、toftwojournalsforthe?eld,andthecommitmenttoproducethishandbookasthe?rstclearandcohesivedescriptionofthe?eld.Withthepublicationofthishandbookthereisnowasenseofunityandmaturitytothe?eld.Thehandbookrepresentsamomentousaccomplishmentforwhichweowetheedito
