2、ancialsectorwithsomeperceivedimplicationstomacroeconomicstability.Thispaperattemptstoinvestigatefirstlytheimpactofforeignbankentryontheperformanceofdomesticbanks,andsecondlyhowthisrelationshipisaffectedbythesequenceoffinancialliberalization.Ourdatasetiscon
3、structedfromtheBANKSCOPEdatabaseincluding30developedanddevelopingcountriesandcoveringtheperiodfrom1995to2002.Weapplypaneldataregressionsbypoolingallcountriestogether,andbygroupingcountriesaccordingtothesequenceoftheirfinancialliberalization.Oneobservationb
4、asedondescriptiveanalysisisthatthedegreeofopennesstoforeignbankentryvariesagreatdealwhichisnotcorrelatedwithaverageincomelevelsorwithGDPgrowth.Second,thesequenceoffinancialliberalizationmattersfortheperformanceofdomesticbankingsector:Aftercontrollingformac
5、roeconomicvariablesandgroupingcountriesbytheirsequenceofliberalization,foreignbankentryhassignificantlyimproveddomesticbankcompetitivenessincountrieswhichliberalizedtheirstockmarketfirst.Inthesecountries,bothprofitandcostindicatorsarenegativelyrelatedtothe
