4、swereconductedusingpoolsofuplandcotton(L.)plants,NuCOTN33B,subjectedtodroughtstress(relativewatercontentreducednaturallyuntilthebollopeningstage)onthedayofanthesisofthemiddlefruitingbranches(MFB),usingwell-wateredconditionsasthecontrol.Thenetphotosyntheticratedeclinedunderdroughtstressi
5、ntheboll'ssubtendingleaf,respectively,andthedeclinerangewasMFB>upperfruitingbranch(UFB)>lowerfruitingbranch(LFB).DroughtstressincreasedthesolublesugarcontentsofsubtendingleavesatLFBandUFBbutdecreasedthematMFB.Sucrosecontentwasincreasedandstarchcontentdecreasedconcomitantly,indicatingtha
6、tdroughtfacilitatedthepartitioningofphotosynthateintosucrose.Droughtstressalsodepressedtheactivitiesofsucrosephosphatesynthaseandsucrosesynthase,whileacidinvertaseactivitywasinitiallydecreasedandthenincreased.ThechangesofMFBandUFBexceededthoseofLFB,indicatingthatsucrosesynthesiswasinhib
7、ited,thedegradationwasfirstinhibitedthenpromoted,causingareductionintheamountofsucroseavailableforexport.Asaresult,thebollweightdeclinedduringdrought,andthedeclinerangewasMFB>UFB>LFB.Inconclusion,thedecreasedsucrosesynthesisandtheimpairedsucroseeffluxofsubtendingleavesofbollswe
