1、DesigningAgainstFireOfBulidingJohnLynchABSTRACT:Thispaperconsidersthedesignofbuildingsforfiresafety.Itisfoundthatfireandtheassoci-atedeffectsonbuildingsissignificantlydifferenttootherformsofloadingsuchasgravityliveloads,windandearthquakesandtheirrespectiveeffectsonthebuild
2、ingstructure.Fireeventsarederivedfromthehumanactivitieswithinbuildingsorfromthemalfunctionofmechanicalandelectricalequipmentprovidedwithinbuildingstoachieveaserviceableenvironment.Itisthereforepossibletodirectlyinfluencetherateoffirestartswithinbuildingsbychanginghumanbeha
3、viour,improvedmaintenanceandimproveddesignofmechanicalandelectricalsystems.Furthermore,shouldafiredevelops,itispossibletodirectlyinfluencetheresultingfireseveritybytheincorporationoffiresafetysystemssuchassprinklersandtoprovidemeasureswithinthebuildingtoenablesaferegressfr
4、omthebuilding.Theabilitytoinfluencetherateoffirestartsandtheresultingfireseverityisuniquetotheconsiderationoffirewithinbuildingssinceotherloadssuchaswindandearthquakesaredirectlyafunctionofnature.Thepossibleapproachesfordesigningabuildingforfiresafetyarepresentedusinganexa
5、mpleofamulti-storeybuildingconstructedoverarailwayline.Thedesignofboththetransferstructuresupportingthebuildingovertherailwayandthelevelsabovethetransferstructureareconsideredinthecontextofcurrentregulatoryrequirements.Theprinciplesandassumptionsassoci-atedwithvariousappro
