1、MachinabilityOfSteelsBecausesteelsareamongthemostimportantengineeringmaterials,theirmachinabilityhasbeenstudiedextensively.Themachinabilityofsteelshasbeenmainlyimprovedbyaddingleadandsulfurtoobtainso-calledfree-machiningsteels.ResulfurizedandRephosphorizedsteels.Sulfurinst
2、eelsformsmanganesesulfideinclusions(second-phaseparticles),whichactasstressraisersintheprimaryshearzone.Asaresult,thechipsproducedbreakupeasilyandaresmall;thisimprovesmachinability.Thesize,shape,distribution,andconcentrationoftheseinclusionssignificantlyinfluencemachinabil
3、ity.Elementssuchastelluriumandselenium,whicharebothchemicallysimilartosulfur,actasinclusionmodifiersinresulfurizedsteels.Phosphorusinsteelshastwomajoreffects.Itstrengthenstheferrite,causingincreasedhardness.Hardersteelsresultinbetterchipformationandsurfacefinish.Notethatso
4、ftsteelscanbedifficulttomachine,withbuilt-upedgeformationandpoorsurfacefinish.Thesecondeffectisthatincreasedhardnesscausestheformationofshortchipsinsteadofcontinuousstringyones,therebyimprovingmachinability.LeadedSteels.Ahighpercentageofleadinsteelssolidifiesatthetipofmang
5、anesesulfideinclusions.Innon-resulfurizedgradesofsteel,leadtakestheformofdispersedfineparticles.Leadisinsolubleiniron,copper,andaluminumandtheiralloys.Becauseofitslowshearstrength,therefore,leadactsasasolidlubricant(Section32.11)andissmearedoverthetool-chipinterfaceduringc
6、utting.Thisbehaviorhasbeenverifiedbythepresenceofhighconcentrationsofleadonthetool-sidefaceofchipswhenmachiningleadedsteels.Whenthetemperatureissufficientlyhigh-forinstance,athighcuttingspeedsandfeeds(Section20.6)—theleadmeltsdirectlyinfrontofthetool,actingasaliquidlubrica
