4、ughtheseparatingjointinterfaces.Manydesign-orientedmethodsrelatingtothiskindofapproachhavebeendevelopedinthepastdecades,amongthem,thewell-known‘‘blocktheory,’’whichattemptstoidentifypoten-tiallyunstablelumpsofrockfromgeometricalandkinematicalconsider
5、ations(GoodmanandShi1985;Warburton1987;Goodman1995).Oneshouldalsoquotethewidelyuseddistinctelementmethod,originatingfromtheworksofCundallandcoauthors(CundallandStrack1979;Cundall1988),whichmakesuseofanexplicit?nite-differencenumericalschemeforcomputi
6、ngthedisplacementsoftheblocksconsideredasrigidordeformablebodies.Inthiscontext,attentionisprimarilyfocusedontheformulationofrealisticmodelsfordescribingthejointbehavior.Sincethepreviouslymentioneddirectapproachisbecominghighlycomplex,andthennumerical
7、lyuntractable,assoonasaverylargenumberofblocksisinvolved,itseemsadvisabletolookforalternativemethodssuchasthosederivedfromtheconceptofhomogenization.Actually,suchaconceptisalreadypartiallyconveyedinanempiricalfashionbythefamousHoekandBrown’scriterion
