2、communicatewitheachother,dobusiness,makefriendsandsolveproblems.However,therearemanydifferencesbetweentheirlanguages,culturesandcustoms.OneofthebiggestdifferencesbetweenChinaandAmericaliesintheculturaldifferencesintheimportanceofcontextincommunication.AccordingtoE.T.HallinhisbookBeyo
3、ndCulture,communicationcanbedividedintotwokindsfromtheangleofcontext.Thecommunicationwithmainrelianceoncontextiscalledhigh-contextcommunication,whilethecommunicationrelyingmostlyonlanguageiscalledlow-contextcommunication.ThisthesisisdevelopedonHall’stheoryofhigh-contextandlow-context
4、cultures,mainlydwellingonthecomparisonofcommunicationstylesbetweenhigh-contextandlow-contextcultureswithChinaandtheUSAastherepresentativesrespectively.Contextplaysanimportantroleincommunication.Hallandhiswifedefinedcontextas“theinformationthatsurroundsanevent;itisinextricablyboundupw
5、iththemeaningofthatevent.”Lowcontexttendstopreferdirectverbalinteractionandunderstandmeaningatonlevelonly.WhileHighcontexttendstopreferindirectverbalinteractionandunderstandmeaningsembeddedatmanysocio-culturallevels.Inlowcontext,peoplevalueindividualism,relymoreonlogicandemploylinear
6、logic.However,inhighcontext,peoplevaluegroupmembership,relymoreoncontextandfeelingandemployspirallogic.Chinesearetypicalexampleofhighcontext,theytalkaroundpoint,avoidsaying“no”.Communicateinsimple,ambiguous,noncontextedmessages;understandsvisualmessagesreadily.Onthecountry,theUSAaret
