3、rshopetobringreadersintomedievaldiscussionsasdirectlyaspossible,enablingthemtoappreciateforthemselvesthephilo-sophicalmotivesinstigatingthesediscussionsandtheboldness,sub-tlety,andanalyticrigorwithwhichtheywerecarriedon.Theaimistoexhibitthevarietyandfreshnessofmedievalapproa
4、chestoproblemsratherthantoevaluatesolutions.Thisisnottodenythattimelesstruthcanbefoundinthematerialpresented.Manystudentsofmedievalmetaphysicswouldholdthatthedisciplinehadenteredon“thesurepathofascience,”inKant’sphrase,severalcenturiesbe-foreKantrestricteditsscopetolayingbar
5、etheconditionsofpossibleexperience(andwouldattributeKant’sdismissalofearliereffortsas“randomgroping”totypicalEnlightenmentignoranceofmedievalthought).Weareconvinced,however,thattheinsightsofmedievalphilosophyappearmostclearlyinthemidstofthediscussionsinwhichthemedievalsthems
