4、urebaseddesignandfeaturemodelconversionandraisesimportantissues.1Introduction:WhyFeatures?Intheearly1960sIvanSutherlanddevelopedtheSKETCHPADsystem[Sutherland,1963],amilestoneofresearchachievementincomputergraphics.TheevolutionofcomputergraphicshassinceresultedinthedevelopmentofCompu

5、terAidedDesign(CAD).TheearlyCADsystemswereessentiallyfortwo-dimensionaldrawinganddrafting.Solidmodelingtechniquesemergedtodescribethree-dimensionalproductsunambiguously[Requicha,1980],andwehaveseenaproliferationofsolidmodelersandthree-dimensionalCADsystems.Ontheotherhand,NumericalCo

6、ntrol(NC)machineswere rstintroducedintheearly1950sandsparkedtheresearchanddevelopmentofComputerAidedManufacturing(CAM).Inindustry,CADtechniquesareextensivelyusedtodesignproducts,andCAMtechniquesareusedtomanufacturetheproducts.However,therehasbeenverylittlecommunicationbetweenCADandC

7、AM[Bedworthetal.,1991].ComputerAidedProcessPlanning(CAPP)hasemergedasthecommunicationagentbetweenCADandCAM.CADdataconsistmainlyofgeometricinformationabouttheproduct.GivenCADdata,CAPPgeneratesasequencedsetofinstructionsusedtomanufacturethespeci edproduct.Inordertodothat,CAPPhastoextr
