3、nvironment.Thispaperoffersacounterpointtoclaimsoftheterm’sdiminishedrelevance,aswellastosomerecenteffortstorepositiontheterm,byputtingforthaninterpretiveapproachthatisnotexclusivetothe“institutionalcommunicator”andthatallowstheterm“mass”toextendtoboththesendersandreceiversofmessages.Thispaperarguest
4、hatthisinterpretiveapproachisinkeepingwithsomeearlyinterpretationsoftheconcept’smeaning,andthatsuchaninterpretationisviableinlightofthedefinitionalambiguitythathasalwayssurroundedtheterm.Thispaperthenconsidershowthenotionofthe“work”oftheaudienceisreconfiguredinthisnewmasscommunicationenvironment.Ast

6、thasevolved,argumentshavepersistedthatthetermhasoutliveditsusefulness,thatitfailstocapturethedynamicsofthecontemporarymediasystem.Yet,thoughdiminished,thetermhasendured.Changesnowtakingplaceinthemediaenvironmentwouldseemtowarrantanotherroundofre-examinationofthetermanditscontinuedrelevanceincommunic
