3、giousaffiliation,language,andgender--tonameonlyafew.Twothingsareessentialtorememberaboutcultures:theyarealwayschanging,andtheyrelatetothesymbolicdimensionoflife.Thesymbolicdimensionistheplacewhereweareconstantlymakingmeaningandenactingouridentities.Culturalmessagesfromthegroupswebe
4、longtogiveusinformationaboutwhatismeaningfulorimportant,andwhoweareintheworldandinrelationtoothers--ouridentities.Culturalmessages,simply,arewhateveryoneinagroupknowsthatoutsidersdonotknow.Theyarethewaterfishswimin,unawareofitseffectontheirvision.Theyareaseriesoflensesthatshapewhat
5、weseeanddon'tsee,howweperceiveandinterpret,andwherewedrawboundaries.Inshapingourvalues,culturescontainstartingpointsandcurrencies[1].Startingpointsarethoseplacesitisnaturaltobegin,whetherwithindividualorgroupconcerns,withthebigpictureorparticularities.Currenciesarethosethingswecare
6、aboutthatinfluenceandshapeourinteractionswithothers.HowCulturesWorkThoughlargelybelowthesurface,culturesareashifting,dynamicsetofstartingpointsthatorientusinparticularwaysandawayfromotherdirections.Eachofusbelongstomultipleculturesthatgiveusmessagesaboutwhatisnormal,appropriate,and
