2、ious,influencingconflictandattemptstoresolveconflictinimperceptibleways.Culturesaremorethanlanguage,dress,andfoodcustoms.Culturalgroupsmaysharerace,ethnicity,ornationality,buttheyalsoarisefromcleavagesofgeneration,socioeconomicclass,sexualorientation,abilityanddisability,poli
3、ticalandreligiousaffiliation,language,andgender--tonameonlyafew.Twothingsareessentialtorememberaboutcultures:theyarealwayschanging,andtheyrelatetothesymbolicdimensionoflife.Thesymbolicdimensionistheplacewhereweareconstantlymakingmeaningandenactingouridentities.Culturalmessage
4、sfromthegroupswebelongtogiveusinformationaboutwhatismeaningfulorimportant,andwhoweareintheworldandinrelationtoothers--ouridentities.Culturalmessages,simply,arewhateveryoneinagroupknowsthatoutsidersdonotknow.Theyarethewaterfishswimin,unawareofitseffectontheirvision.Theyareaser
5、iesoflensesthatshapewhatweseeanddon'tsee,howweperceiveandinterpret,andwherewedrawboundaries.Inshapingourvalues,culturescontainstartingpointsandcurrencies[1].Startingpointsarethoseplacesitisnaturaltobegin,whetherwithindividualorgroupconcerns,withthebigpictureorparticularities.
6、Currenciesarethosethingswecareaboutthatinfluenceandshapeourinteractionswithothers.HowCulturesWorkThoughlargelybelowthesurface,culturesareashifting,dynamicsetofstartingpointsthatorientusinparticularwaysandawayfromotherdirections.Eachofusbelongstomultipleculturesthatgiveusmessa
