1、MATéRIELCULTUREThetwentiethcenturyprobablysawnomoreconflictthaninpreviouscenturies;increasedglobalcommunicationandmediacoveragehave,however,heightenedourawarenessofit.Thescaleandintensityofwarwasgreaterthananythingbeforeandthehumancostreachedunprecedentedandpreviouslyunimaginable
2、levels.Followingtheendofthecenturythematerialityofthesemanyconflicts–fromlocalskirmishestoworldwars–isbecomingacceptedontotheheritageagendaasavalidformofculturalresourceforthebenefitoffuturegenerations.MatérielCulturedescribestheserecentdevelopments,anddocumentswhythestudyofconfl
3、ictisimportant–andtowhom.Theterm‘matérielculture’encompassesthematerialremainsofconflict,frombuildingsandmonumentstoartefactsandmilitaria,aswellashumanremains.Thiscollectionofessays,fromaninternationalrangeofcontributors,illustratesthediversityinthismaterialrecord,highlightsthedi
