4、AbstractEnglishparticipialcompoundsarecompoundswith—ingparticiplesand．edparticiplesinEnglish．Compoundingisoneofthemostproductiveword—formationinEnglish，andtherefore，isanimportanttopicofstudiesinEnglishmorphology．ThepreviousstudiesonEnglishparticipialcompoundshavebeendonetoomuchonin
5、ternalstructuresandinternalsemanticmeaningsofthemandtherearefewsystematicresearchesontheselectionbetween-ingand—edparticiples．Fromtheperspectiveoflinguisticevolution，thethesishasprovidedasystematicaccountoftheselectionbetween-ingand—edparticiples．Inthethesis，thedefinitionofparticip
6、ialcompoundshasbeenmadeandaccordingtogrammaticalfunctions，participialcompoundscanbedividedintothreetypes，nominalparticipialcompounds，adjectivalparticipialcompoundsandadverbialparticipialcompounds．ThethesishasmadeanaccountofthecognitivenatureofEnglishparticipialcompoundsandpointedou
7、tthattheyaretheresultsoflinguisticevolution．Specificallyspeaking，participialcompoundshavebeenevolvedfromthefiniteornonfiniteclausesthatarecomplexinlinguisticforms．Basedontheircognitivenature，thethesishasfurtherstudiedtheirevolutionaryprocessesofparticipialcompounds，namely,thefocusi
