2、exbehavioursandarenowhaving'unsafe'sexinrelationtopossibleinfectionwithHIVaredescribedashaving'relapsed'.Inthispaperwecriticallyevaluatethisconcept.Firstlyweundertakeamethodologicalcritique,lookinginsomedetailatstudieswhichhaveused'relapse'.Wethenprovideaconceptualcritique,su
3、ggestingthattheconstructionofhumansexualityimplicitintheuseofthistermisinappropriatetothestudyofsexualbehaviour.Finally,wesuggestwhyaconceptsuchasrelapseshouldappearintheliteratureontheHIV/AIDSepidemicatthistime.IntroductionDespitecriticismofgovernmentsinthedevelopedworldfora
4、lackofactionandfundingforresearchandservicesforthoseaffectedbyAIDS,mostnationalandlocalgovernmentshavedirectedspecificmoniestoAIDSresearch,servicesandtreatment.Manymedicalspecialitiessuchasepidemiology,genitourinarymedicineandthebio-medicalsciencesofvirologyandimmunologyhaveb
5、enefitedfromtheinjectionofapparently'new'resources.ForsocialscientistsinvolvedinbehaviouralstudiesofpopulationsatriskofHIVinfection-deemednecessaryforthepurposesofepidemiologicaisurveillanceandhealtheducation-therehavealsobeenresourcesavailabletoundertakelargesurveys,smallqua
