3、fthepublishedastrophysicalworkovera10yearperiodoftheDepartmentwhichgrantsthePhDand;second,lookingattheimpactofthepublishedastrophysicalworkfromtheUniversityasawholeincludingLaboratories,Centers,andFacilitiesattheUniversity.TheUniversitiesconsideredinthestudyaredrawnfromthe1992NationalResearc
4、hCouncilstudyonProgramsofResearch,DoctorateinAstrophysicsandAstronomy(Goldberg,etal.,1995)withthreeUniversitiesadded.JohnsHopkinsUniversity,MichiganStateUniversity,andNorthwesternUniversityallhostsubstantialastronomicalresearchwithintheirDepartmentsofPhysicsandAstronomyandsoareincludedhere.T
