5、oftenthattheadviceofthismostinfluentialhistorianwentunheeded.ThatitdidsointhiscasecanprobablybeattributedtothefirmlyempiricaltraditionofBritishhistoricalscholarship,whosereputationhaslongresteduponarigorouscommandoftheprimarysources,adistastefortheoryandspeculation,andaproperaversiontothe
6、superficialitywhichanoddingacquaintancewithotherdisciplinesfrequentlybringsinitstrain.Thesequalitiesinalltheirstrengthandweaknessarebestexemplifiedinthepresentstateofmedievalstudies-austere,disciplinedandprofoundlyhostiletooutsideinfluence.Tosomeextent,however,theanthropologistshavethemse
