3、andBosnia,followingthebreak-upofYugoslavia,presentsanunparalleledopportunitytounderstandmoreabouthowtheprocessesofethnonationalizationandmasculinizationoperateineverydaylife,andabouthowmenfromSerbiamadesenseoftheirdecisionsaboutparticipationinthewars.InthepresentpaperIexplorethewa

4、ysnationalismandmasculinityintersectandoverlap,in?uenceandarein?uencedbywarparticipation,bylookingcloserintothewarvolunteersfromSerbiawhojoinedtheYugoslavwarsofsecession,19911995.MethodsandDesignThisstudywasdesignedasanethnographyofwarparticipation.Duringthesummerof2000andbetweenJ

5、une2001andSeptember2002,Iconducted40in-depthsemi-structuredinterviewswithformerwarvolunteersfromPancˇevoasmalltowninVojvodina,about15milesnorthofBelgrade.Iaskedsimilarquestionsofeachrespondenttoensureoverallcomparability,butalsoencouragedthemtoelaborateontheiranswersinwaystheyfoun

6、dpersonallyrelevant.Interviewslastedanywherefromonetoeighthours.Therewasnosamplingframe,sinceanaccuratesamplingframewouldhavebeenpossibleonlyifSerbianmilitaryof?cialshadagreedtoletmeusetheir?les(whichtheydidnot).Thus,Iconstructedasnowballsampleand,whileIamawareoftheproblemsinheren
