4、cdissolvedorganicmatterinmarinewaters.Thisstudypresentsfirst-ordermicrobialCOconsumptionrateconstants(kCO)determinedusingwhole-waterdarkincubationsinsummerandfallindiversemarineecosystemscoveringtheDelawareBay,NWAtlantic,andBeaufortSea.ThemicrobialCOconsumptionrateconstant,

5、kCO(mean±SD)was1.11±0.76h–1intheDelawareBay,0.33±0.26h–1inthecoastalAtlantic,0.099±0.054h–1intheopenAtlantic,0.040±0.012h–1inthecoastalBeaufortSeaand0.020±0.0060h–1intheoffshoreBeaufortSea.ThekCOintheDelawareBaycovariedwithchlorophyllaconcentration([chla]),risingwithincreas

6、ingsalinityintherange0to19anddiminishingwithfurtherincreasingsalinity.ThekCOintheBeaufortSeaissignificantlypositivelycorrelatedwith[chla].BoththeAtlanticandcross-systemdatasetsshowedsignificantpositivecorrelationsbetweenkCOandtheproductof[chla]andwatertemperature,suggesting

7、that[chla]canbeusedasanindicatorofCO-consumingbacterialactivityintheareasandseasonssampledinthisstudy.MicrobialCOconsump-tionwasshowntofollowWright-Hobbiekinetics,withvariablebutlowhalf-saturationconcentra-tions:~1nMintheBeaufortSeaandGulfStreamand2to18nMinthecoastalNWAtlan
