2、ofresearchlibrariansasidentifiedandreflectedinfindingsofrecentsubstantialsurveysandstudies.ASouthAfricanjointuniversitylibrariesproject,fundedbyCarnegieCorporation[sic]ofNewYork,hasasitsaimthestrengtheningoflibrarysupportforacademicresearchersthroughthedevelopmentofresearchlibra
3、riansmoreknowledgeableabouttheirsubjectdomainsandresearchprocesses,anddiffer-entlyandmorehighlyskilled,thanpresentsubjectreferencelibrarians.Recentstudieshighlighttheimportanceofnewknowledge,skillsandattitudesfortheen-hancedcredibilityofresearchlibrariansaspartnersontheacademicr
4、esearchteam.ProfessionalworkplacerealitiesinSouthAfricanacademiclibraries,however,indicatethatwidegapsinknowledge,skillandattitude,ascribedtoacomplexlegacyofthepast,mustbenarrowedbeforesuchpartnershipsbecomegenerallypossible.Thepaperconsidershowsuchtransformationmightbeachievedi
5、naSouthAfricancontext,andproposesasyetuntestedbutfeasibleoptionsthatmightsupportandcontributetowardsestablishingresearchpartnerlibrarians,thusalsocontributingtoimprovingresearchthroughputandproductivityinacademicinsti-tutions,aSouthAfricannationalimperative.INTRODUCTION…ifwewere
