3、nmuchlesssuccessful.Intheaftermathofthe1997economiccrises,thelevelofpovertyhasrisenduetosharpincreasesinunemployment.ThelivesofthepoorareatrisksincethesocialsafetynetsysteminKoreaisonlyminimal.Theheavyconcentrationoflandandwealthinafewhandsisamajorobstacletothefurth
4、erenhancementofthequalityofeconomiclifeamongtheKoreanpeople.ThispaperexaminesthechangingqualityofeconomiclifeespeciallyamongKoreanworkerswithsystematicanalysesoftimeseriesdataonincome,consumption,andpoverty.Theanalysesarebasedontwoassumptions.ThefirstiswhatJohnRawls
5、characterizesas“maximinprinciple,”i.e.,thequalityoflifeinagivensocietycannotberegardedassatisfactorywhensomeofitscitizensareinamiserablestateoflife.ThesecondpremiseisthatKoreanworkershaveyettoreceivetheirfairshareofeconomicdevelopment,althoughitisinternationallyrega
6、rdedasmoreequitablethanwhatisobservedinotherdevelopingcountriesINCOMEGROWTHKoreahasdisplayedunprecedentedrapideconomicgrowthfromthemid-1960supuntilthelate1990s,whenanabrupteconomiccrisishitthecountry.Percapitanationalincomeincreased80-foldfromU.S.$125in1966tooverU.S
7、.$10000in1995.ThiskindofrapideconomicgrowthcouldbefoundonlyinfewEastAsiancountrieslikeHongKong,Singapore,andTaiwan.AnothernotablefeatureofeconomicgrowthinKoreaisthatithasnotbeenaccompaniedbyaworseningdistributionofincome,aswitnessedinmanyLatinAmericancountriesINCOME
