2、d.TheLinkcomprisesamongstotherstwocablestayedbridgesandanunderwatertunnelconstructedasaconcreteimmersedtubetunnel.Theimmersedtunnelhasanumberofspecialfeatures:itslengthof3,2km,thewaterdepthofover35m,theseveremarineconditions,thesoftsubsoilandalignmentconstraints.Combinedwiththescaleoftheprojectth
3、esefeaturesmakethedesignandtheconstructionofthetunnelamajorchallenge.Itisexpectedthattheprojectwillopenupnewhorizonsfortheuseofimmersedtunneltechnology.Thispaperhighlightsthesespecialfeaturesandconcentratesonthecivilandstructuralaspectsonly.1.INTRODUCTIONBusanisthesecondlargestcityandamajorharbou
4、rinSouthKorea.ItislocatedinthesoutheastandborderedbytheKoreanStraitatthesouthandeastsidewhilstatthenorthsteepmountainsarise.Thecityisdevelopingrapidly;thepopulationgrewovertherecentyearsto3,7millioninhabitantsinthecity(4,6millionintheagglomeration).Thedensityofpopulationis4850inhabitants/km2which
5、isaboutthree-quarterofthedensityofHongKong.Theoptionsforexpansionarelimitedduetoitsgeographiclocation.TheBusan-GeojeLinkhastocreateadirectlinkbetweenGeojeIslandandthecityofBusanwiththeobjectivetoallowBusantoexpand,todevelopindustrialareasonGeojeandtoaddrecreationalfacilitieswithindrivingdistanceo
6、fBusancity.GeojeIslandiscurrentlyconnectedtothemainlandatthewestsideoftheisland.ThetwohoursdrivebycarfromBusancitytoGeojewillbereducedto45minutesaftercompletionoftheLink.TheBusan一GeojeFixedLinkwillprovidearoadconnectionbetweenGeojeIslandandGadukIslandaspartofadualcarriagemotorwayconnectingtheBusa
7、nNewportregiontotheislandofGeoje.TheLinkwillbe8.204kmintotal,crossesnavigationchannelsandlinksthesmallislandof徳鷲克，JungjukandJeo,whichareuninhabited.Theprinciplecomponentsofthelinkareanimmersetunnel3240mlongwithtwo-lane
