3、-andinserviceteachersthroughcollaborativeresearchinanEnglishasaForeignLanguage(EFL)setting.Studieshaveshownthatteacherresearchhasaprofoundeffectonthosewhohavedoneit,insomecasestransformingclassroomsandschools.Ithasbeenfoundtofacilitateteachers'criticalthought,boostteachers'self-esteem,andin
4、creasetheirawarenessofstudents'needs.Yet,ithasbeenobservedthatneitherpre-norin-serviceteachersofEnglishcandomuchresearchinTurkey.Themainreasonisthatpre-serviceteachersgenerallycannotgetpermissionfromschoolsforresearch,andin-serviceteachersdonothavesufficienttimeandtrainingtoconductresearch.
5、Thus,theimpetusforthisstudycamefromthebeliefthatifpre-andin-serviceteachersareencouragedtocollaborateforresearch,bothpartieswillbenefit.Tenpre-serviceandtenin-serviceteachersparticipatedinthisstudy.Afterbeingprovidedwithrelevanttheoreticalknowledgeonresearch,theycollaboratedandconductedthei
6、rresearchinin-serviceteachers'classes.Itwasfoundthatparticipatingincollaborativeactionresearchgaveteachersfrombothgroupsaframeworkforsystematicallyobserving,evaluating,andreflectingontheirL2teachingpractices.Theyalsogainedanunderstandingoftheimportanceofcollaboration.IntroductionThereisgene
7、ralagreementthatlearningtoteachisalifelongprocess,andteachersmustbeequippedwithsufficientknowledge,skill,andawarenessinordertocarryoutTESL-EJ10.2,Sept.2006Atay1theirjobs.In-serviceeducationandtraining(INSET)--intendedtostimulatetheprofessionalcompetenceanddevelopmentofteachers(Kennedy,1995)
