2、shimaPrefecturalTechnologyResearchInstitute,Hiroshima,JapanSUMMARY:Previously,weconducteda3-yearprospectivestudytodeterminetheviralcausesofacuterespiratorytractinfectionsamong495febrilepediatricoutpatients.Wecollected495nasopharyn-gealaspiratespecimens,andusedbothreal-time
3、PCRassaysandviralculturetotesteachforrespira-toryvirusesotherthancoronavirus.Here,weusedreal-timePCRtotestthe495archivalspecimensforfourhumancoronavirusstrains.Weidentified15coronavirus-positivespecimens:eightwithOC43,5withNL63,2withHKU1,andnonewith229E.Ofthe15children(5bo
4、ys)infectedwithhumancoronavirus,themeanagewas3.5years,andtheagerangewas1.1to5.8years;onechildwasdiagnosedwithlowerrespiratoryinfection;theother14werediagnosedwithupperrespiratoryinfection.Ofthese15patients,nonewerehospitalized,5wereinfectedwithcoronavirusalone,8wereco-infe
5、ctedwithanothervirus,and2wereco-infectedwith2otherviruses.Themulti-virusinfectionsinvolved6adenoviruses,3respiratorysyncytialviruses,2parainfluenzaviruses,and1rhinovirus.Inconclusion,theburdenofhumancoronaviruseswasrelativelylightamongthiscohortof495pediatricoutpatients,an
6、dtheincidenceoftheseinfectionswaslow.Humancoronaviruses(HCoVs)wereinitiallyidenti-Thepreviousprospectivestudywasconductedoverafiedascausesofupperrespiratorytractinfections3-yearperiodbetweenSeptember2008andAugust2011(URTI)inthe1960sbasedontissuecultureassays(1,2).attheHara
7、PediatricClinic,aprimarycareclinic,andTwooftheHCoVstrains(HCoV-OC43andHCoV-theHealthandEnvironmentCenteroftheHiroshima229E)weredetectedpredominantlyinindividualswithPrefecturalTechnologyResearchInstitute(12).Eachcommoncolds(3–6).Thereafter,threenewHCoVnasopharyngealaspirat
